KOTA TINGGI: A 20-year-old woman delivered a boy in an oil palm plantation in Felda Air Tawar 3 here with the help of her boyfriend, in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

However, after giving birth to the boy at 3am, the woman and her boyfriend left the infant with his umbilical cord attached on a the bonnet of a parked car near Felda Sungai Mas, about 30km from here.

When the 39-year-old car owner was about to send his daughter to school at 7am, he saw the baby and rushed him to Kota Tinggi Hospital before alerting the police.

Deputy district police chief Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Shamsuddin said the 3kg infant was wrapped in a piece of cloth and was in stable condition.

The village was abuzz with talk of the baby boy being found, and drew many of them to the hospital to see the boy.

Surprisingly, the infant's mother also made her way to the hospital.

She looked pale and weak and paid too much attention to the baby, making the hospital's management suspicious.

She finally admitted being the mother and abandoning the baby.

The unmarried woman from Felda Tunggal has another child who is about a year old and in the care of her parents.

She was detained by police to facilitate investigations for abandoning the infant. Her 25-year-old boyfriend from Kampung Teluk Empang near Pengerang was also arrested. - NST
